What Would San Antonio Have To Give Up?

For the Spurs to move into the top three and have a shot at selecting Jabari, it would likely take a decent haul of players and picks. To get an idea of what kind of trade this could look like, we need to go back to the last time a top three pick was traded on draft night.

In 2018, the Dallas Mavericks traded their fifth overall pick and a future first-round pick to the Atlanta Hawks for the rights to the number three pick, which they used to select Luka Doncic.

Trading two lottery picks for a star like Doncic doesn't seem like such an absurd package in hindsight, but we have to remember that he wasn't regarded nearly as highly on draft night in 2018 as he is now. With all the hype surrounding Jabari Smith, it's possible the Spurs would have to package multiple first round picks and perhaps even a young player like Devin Vassell or Keldon Johnson, depending on who they're trading with.

The Verdict

Ultimately, trading up for Smith is an opportunity the Spurs have to take if it presents itself to them. Getting a future star with the potential to be a franchise cornerstone for the next decade-plus would easily be worth parting with multiple first-round picks.

Players like Jabari Smith don't grow on trees. A talented, modern big is exactly what the Spurs need right now, and Smith's skill set will allow him to flourish in this league for years to come. With all the draft capital the Spurs have this summer, they would be wise to push all their chips to the center of the table and try to acquire him.
