Other Options for the San Antonio Spurs

Markkanen is a more realistic option, with the Chicago Bulls appearing to be disinterested in retaining him. Lauri does struggle on defense and with rebounding, but he does fill a need. Lauri averaged 13.6 points in 25.8 minutes per game while shooting an impressive 40.2 percent on 5.8 threes. San Antonio desperately needs shooting in the starting lineup and he could provide it.

Duncan Robinson could also provide much-needed shooting as a 42.3 percent career 3-point shooter. While the Miami Heat would be loath to lose Robinson, the Spurs could make a strong offer that could make them hesitant to match.

Assuming the Spurs can land one of those players, they'd be smart to continue to address their lack of shooting. Re-signing Patty Mills would make sense for that reason.

Mills isn't guaranteed to return, however, because he'll likely be pursued by several contending teams. The Spurs will have to work simultaneously to ensure his return while pursuing other free agents.

Otto Porter Jr. would also be a solid addition. Porter is known for his defensive ability and is a career 40.2 percent 3-point shooter. At 6-8, Porter has good size and length and should be able to defend and play both forward positions. He's struggled with injury in recent seasons, affecting his production, though he could possibly be a value signing if healthy.

San Antonio is unlikely to spend all of its considerable cap space, so renting it out should be an option. The Spurs could offer to take back bad contracts from teams facing the luxury tax in exchange for picks.

In this case, leaving a roster spot or two open may be necessary to complete a trade. After all, acquiring additional picks could aid the Spurs rebuild, making it easier to trade up in future drafts.

In my ideal scenario, this will be the team's roster next season:

Dejounte Murray
Derrick White
Keldon Johnson
Lauri Markkanen
Jakob Poeltl
Patty Mills
Lonnie Walker IV
Devin Vassell
Otto Porter Jr.
Drew Eubanks
Luka Samanic
Tre Jones
Franz Wagner
Gorgui Dieng

Next. Draft or Pass on 3 potential draft targets. dark

The Spurs have an opportunity to drastically remake their roster while addressing some of their biggest weaknesses. It may not mean a return to the playoffs next season. That said, they can take a significant step towards building a better team this off-season.
