San Antonio Spurs guard Derrick White has bigger connections with the city of Denver than his breakout series against their Nuggets in 2019. Born in Parker, Colorado, White played high school basketball there and then excelled in his one season with the Colorado Buffaloes.
Although now firmly embraced by San Antonio, White still goes back to Colorado any chance he gets to re-visit some of his favorite spots from growing up. Recently, he headed back to his stomping grounds to give the YouTube channel Whistle a grand tour.
"It's what's home for me," said White. "It's where I spent most of my life, met my friends, fell in love with basketball. Everything that I am came from the state of Colorado.
One of the biggest attractions in the city (and one of the coolest concert venues), Red Rocks, was somewhere he's frequented for hikes and conditioning. "It's a great conditioning workout," said White. "You can run up and down, side to side."
From Red Rocks, White then takes the crew on a venture to a Mexican restaurant called My Neighbor Felix. Expressing his love for fajitas and quesadillas, White ending up in San Antonio seems like fate. "That's like my number one item I buy at room service," said White. "Chicken quesadilla."
Now entering his fifth season with the San Antonio Spurs, White looks to be one of the leaders in getting them back to the postseason for the first time since their Game 7 loss to his hometown Nuggets.
Derrick won't have to wait long to go back to the city he loves once again. The Spurs' first road game of the season will be in Denver as they take on MVP Nikola Jokic and the Nuggets on October 22nd at 9 pm ET.
