Pop and the San Antonio Spurs will love Usman Garuba's hustle
Spurs fans have already gotten a taste of what it looks like when a raw, energetic player gets some discipline from Coach Pop. When Keldon Johnson made the jump to San Antonio from Austin, it became evident very quickly that he and Coach Pop would work magic together. After all, Pop is the one that originally compared him to a wild mustang.
Usman Garuba's motor reminded me a lot of Keldon Johnson when I was able to watch him play with Real Madrid, but Garuba comes in a roughly 6'8", 230-pound package. Not only that, but I think that he has the potential to be one of the best two or three defenders in his entire draft class.
Being that he's already so polished on the defensive end of the floor, barring a few minor subtleties, Coach Pop will be able to focus on teaching Garuba all of his knowledge on the other end of the floor. Even when he first comes into the league though, Coach Pop should be able to appreciate the hustle plays that he can make on a whim. With how much Pop values defense, it's also a bit of a no-brainer that he'll be thrilled with Garuba's defensive instincts.
Garuba is a very interesting prospect in this year's draft, to the point that I did a full write-up on him a couple of months ago. His versatility on defense can be a total game-changer for the Spurs, and his potential on the other end of the floor is intriguing enough to take a chance on, especially if he works well with Coach Pop.
