Grading the Spurs' Derrick White trade
When examining the two deadline deals made by the Spurs, the Derrick White trade is definitely the more shocking of the two. The Spurs shipped White to the Celtics for Josh Richardson, a capable shooting guard who could be an underrated get, and Romeo Langford, a former lottery pick who hasn’t lived up to his potential.
Additionally, San Antonio received a lightly protected 2022 1st round pick and the rights to swap 2028 1st-rounders, an underrated part of the deal. That would give the Spurs the ability to trade picks with the Celtics in the event that Boston's pick is higher in that draft.
As for the decision to trade White, the Spurs likely made the move for several reasons. One reason is that they already have Devin Vassell, who's a much younger and cheaper replacement. Also, at age 27, White is in both his prime and in the first year of a four-year deal, meaning he's probably at the peak of his value.
Although White was one of the team's best two-way players, was trading him to Boston the right call in the end?
