2020 Draft, Pick No. 11: Devin Vassell
Devin Vassell is one of my favorite players on the Spurs right now. Even when I play 2K, I always make sure he's not part of any trades I do. Vassell finished a strong sophomore campaign where we saw him double his scoring, shoot better from three, and become a reliable perimeter defender.
Compared to his first year in the league, Vassell showcased that he can be more involved in their various in-game strategies. The former 11th pick back in 2020 has proved that the Spurs made the right pick.
His increase in minutes helped him shape his game, and in addition, the 32 games where he started gave him enough confidence to play better. The past season also gave him a chance to get more shot attempts, from 4.9 to 10.8 attempts per game. Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich's confidence in Vassell is a positive thing, and I look forward to him giving more opportunities to Vassell.
2021 Draft, Pick No. 12: Josh Primo
Selected 12th overall last year, the Spurs sent fans into total confusion with the pick for Joshua Primo. Looking at the list of players that the Spurs didn't select, I understand why the fans reacted the way they did. The 6'6 guard was even surprised that he was selected that early in the draft.
Primo proved to the fans that he deserves a spot on the Spurs roster by showing what he can do on the court. Scoring 17 points on 87% FG in 18 minutes off the bench in a pre-season game, Primo boosted the fans' confidence in him. However, that was short-lived as the Spurs assigned him to the Austin Spurs, their G League affiliate.
For a lottery pick, Primo's stats seem very underwhelming. He averaged 5.8 points, 1.6 assists, and 2.3 rebounds on 37% FG and shot 30% from beyond the arc, both below league average, while playing almost 20 minutes per game. But I still give him credit for not letting the critics get the best of him.
He has a lot to improve, and he has a lot of time to work on it. He's currently the youngest player in the NBA, and I think he can bounce back stronger next year.
