2. Spurs acquire Talen Horton-Tucker and a 2028 pick swap

The second trade involves the Spurs getting a slightly earlier pick from the Lakers along with 21-year-old shooting guard Talen Horton-Tucker. Outgoing would be Keita Bates-Diop and Doug McDermott.

The clear benefit of this one would be offloading the contract of McDermott, which was named by SportingNews as the fourth-worst deal in the NBA for the 2022-23 NBA season. While his shooting is valuable, his one-dimensional play and age don't really make him a must-start going forward. Starting Jeremy Sochan sooner than later would probably be best for this team in the long run anyway.

As for Horton-Tucker, he's still a young piece with room to grow, but he's just never really moved the needle for me. He's never shown an ability to knock down threes consistently and his overall efficiency offensively is worrisome. He shot just 41.6% from the field last season. Only Lonnie Walker and Josh Primo had worse shooting seasons from this current Spurs roster.

Taking on Westbrook's contract for a swap, some cash, and a mediocre player just doesn't do a whole lot for me. I think if the Spurs are able to wait until the Lakers or Nets get desperate, they should be able to come away with a straightforward, valuable first-round pick at the very least.
