5. Will Portland steal the deal Spurs fans wanted from Phoenix?
As a piece received in the deal for DeMar DeRozan, Thaddeus Young has proven he still has plenty to offer a contending team in his limited minutes on the Spurs. Summer reports suggested there were multiple teams interested in his services, but chatter has died down on that front in the past few weeks.
The rumor that kept coming up more than others was one involving the Phoenix Suns having an interest in Young. The proposed package by many speculating about such a deal usually involved Jalen Smith, Dario Saric, and some draft capital. In Marks' wish for the Spurs, he sends Young to Phoenix for those two plus second-round picks in 2023 and 2024.
With Phoenix recently signing Bismack Biyombo for the rest of the season, that might officially rule a trade with the Spurs out.
If the deal Marks wants to see for Portland happens, though, they could be the team getting the promising young big and assets in exchange for Robert Covington. In his hypothetical trade, the Trail Blazers would give up their 3-and-D specialist for Saric, Smith, and two second-round picks (2025 and 2026).
There are three likely different ways the Spurs will handle Thaddeus Young this season, as I previously outlined. While we don't know why the rumored deal never materialized, it would certainly be a disappointment if San Antonio ended up going through with yet another buyout.
