Dejounte Murray is one of the Best Players in the League
Dejounte Murray is an NBA All-Star and Defensive Player of the Year candidate. On Wednesday, he put up yet another triple-double with 23 points, 10 rebounds, and a whopping 14 assists to go with one turnover and three steals.
In every NBA game ever, there have only been 40 instances of a player having more assists than Murray did on Wednesday with only one turnover. Murray is the best defensive guard in the league period and takes care of the ball better than almost everyone.
In Wednesday's game, Murray got his triple-double without playing in the fourth quarter at all. As far as I can tell, that’s the fifth-fastest triple-double ever, behind Russell Westbrook twice in 28 and 17 minutes, Jim Tucker, who did it in 17 minutes, and Nikola Jokic, who did it in an unbelievable 14 minutes.
Dejounte Murray is putting up some of the best stat lines night in and night out, and unlike most other players, his box scores include some hefty defensive numbers as well. Stats aren’t everything, as wins matter too, but Murray is 42nd in the entire league in win shares.
Oh, by the way, when counting only non-playoff teams (as of January 19th), Murray is sixth, behind Domantis Sabonis, John Collins, Trae Young, Jonas Valanciunas, and Tyrese Haliburton. In terms of defensive win shares, he is 14th in the entire league.
At the start of the season, Murray was ranked 73rd in the NBA by Sports Illustrated. Obviously, poor foresight by that particular publication, as Murray is one of the top 30 players by now, and that’s being very stingy with my ratings.
