For the time being, the Portland Trail Blazers have two picks in a row, the second of which coming by way of the New Orleans Pelicans. Using their own ninth overall pick, the Trail Blazers select Wisconsin’s Johnny Davis.
There isn’t much to talk about in terms of strategy with this pic. If Johnny Davis is still on the board at this point, it would be borderline foolish not to take a chance on him. Davis is my personal favorite guard in the 2022 Draft class and, in my opinion, worthy of a top-five to top-six pick.
Davis was admittedly not on my radar at all to begin this season as Wisconsin was projected to place 10th in the Big Ten. With that in mind, just this past week, Davis led his team to win the Big Ten, leading his entire squad in points per game, rebounds per game, and assists per game. Quite simply, he powered a team that should not have been very good all the way to the NCAA Tournament, outplaying some big-name players on the way there.
Davis’ fit next to Anfernee Simons, let alone Damian Lillard and Simons is a bit questionable, to say the least, but finding another high-level combo guar -- and in this case, one with defensive chops -- to add to the roster would be very on-brand for Portland and would come at a great value at ninth overall. Considering they have the 10th overall pick as well, this would be a very safe and smart pick for the future.
