With LeBron James potentially set to hit free agency, D’Angelo Russell thinks he will join the San Antonio Spurs.

The San Antonio Spurs, with the 2018 NBA Finals over, can enter the anticipated offseason that features a sitdown between Kawhi Leonard and coach Gregg Popovich. There’s also the draft and free agency, with the chance to reshape the roster and return to the top of the league.

LeBron James can bring not only the Spurs but any team to the top, at least if fans look at who has made the NBA Finals since 2011. He did this with the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Miami Heat, so could there be a third team in store?

After James’s Cavaliers were swept Thursday night, NBA players began to “recruit” the future Hall of Famer to their respective teams, including Spurs guard Dejounte Murray. However, one player tweeted less of a “recruitment” message and more of a prediction, as Brooklyn Nets guard D’Angelo Russell thinks the team from the Alamo City will be the recipient:

It’s a bold prediction from Russell as the LeBron sweepstakes have barely started. In fact, free agency does not begin until July 1, and with the 2018 NBA Draft in between, it’s a long road towards the latest “Decision.”

There’s no question of the impact James provides. It’s a matter of how the Spurs can fit him into their team’s salary cap and if there’s enough of a recruitment pitch to bring him there. Also, and it’s only speculation, but one would think that Leonard staying put would help the cause.

The Los Angeles Lakers and Philadelphia 76ers are the other teams often mentioned as a suitor for James due to open cap space. If not them, or the Spurs, most organizations must clear room for him to sign as long as a max contract is the end game.
