Kawhi Leonard will miss the entire preseason for the San Antonio Spurs.
The NBA season is right around the corner. As a result, preseason games are about to begin. The San Antonio Spurs play their first preseason game on Monday.
The Spurs announced on Saturday that superstar Kawhi Leonard will miss the entire preseason to rehab his right quad. There is no time table for his return, but it is likely we will see him in the first game of the regular season. This news may come as a surprise to most Spurs fans.
Leonard suffered a season-ending injury in Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals last season. Since then, Leonard has been gearing up for a return to the NBA.
Leonard averaged 25.5 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game last season.
Finishing third in the 2017 MVP Race last season, this year could be Leonard’s best yet. He needs to be 100% if he wants a chance at winning that MVP award. This could be the Spurs’ way of resting Leonard before the season.
While preseason is a fun and exciting way to prepare for the season, it doesn’t mean much. A lot of star players do not play many minutes in these games anyway. Maybe the Spurs are doing everything possible to save Leonard for the regular season.
This could be a good thing for the Spurs. While this season is looked at to be an uphill battle, the team needs Leonard. The former Finals MVP brings intense defense, scoring, and leadership to the team.
Leonard did not participate in the silver and black scrimmage over the weekend but did make an appearance. It seems that he is committed to coming back as fast as he can. But, he can not rush his recovery. He will be more valuable in May when the Spurs take on the Western Conference Playoffs.
But, with the new rules on resting players, the Spurs might wait awhile before bringing him back. Either way, wish Leonard a speedy recovery.
