TaShawn Thomas: 22-years old, Oklahoma, Power Forward

Draft Express Measurements: 6″8, 240-pounds, 7″2 wingspan

2014-15 Stats: 11.6 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 1.5 blocks, 0.6 steals, 52% field goals, 69% free-throws, 0-3 threes, 29.7 minutes

Quick Season Review: TaShawn Thomas was an important piece on a loaded Oklahoma Sooners team last year. The Sooners went 24-11 and lost in the Sweet 16 against Michigan State. Thomas was third on the Sooners in scoring and second in rebounding. After being a go-to-guy at Houston in his sophomore and junior seasons, Thomas turned into a role player on a strong Sooners team and I say that as a compliment. He alongside Ryan Spangler held down the paint, as the Sooners started a small lineup. In the NCAA Tournament, Thomas averaged 14.3 points, 7 rebounds, and 2.7 blocks. Thomas’ best game of the season was arguably against Tulsa, when he went for 25 points and 5 rebounds.

Strengths: Thomas has an NBA-ready body and an incredibly long wingspan. Polished scorer inside, uses good footwork and array of moves. Terrific at finishing around basket. Good shot-blocker. Improving free-throw shooter. Decent passing big man. Has capability of hitting mid-range shots.

Weaknesses: Undersized for a power forward. Not a good athlete (30.5-inch vertical). Can improve rebounding rate. Must improve shooting range. Must improve speed and quickness. Will he be able to score on taller competition? Turns it over for a big (1.9 to).

Where He Would Help Spurs?

TaShawn Thomas knows his role and that is to bang and defend down low. He is also a solid rebounder and can score in the post. With Tim Duncan likely returning, he can show Thomas a thing or two on offense.

NBA Comparison: Jason Maxiell

Jason Maxiell and TaShawn Thomas have similar size. Like Maxiell, Thomas is a solid rebounder and shot-blocker. Both also have the capability of spotting up. I think Thomas will have a career similar to Maxiell’s as a role player off the bench.
