Quick Season Review: Branden Dawson was one of the main reasons that Michigan St was so successful this season. The Spartans went 27-12 and they lost to Duke in the final four. Dawson is a terrific leader that does the little things it takes to win. Dawson is a coaches dream player as he does whatever is asked and has a high IQ. In the NCAA Tourney, Dawson averaged 11.2 points and 8.8 rebounds. His best game of the season was arguably against Michigan when he finished with 23 points and 13 rebounds.
Strengths: Terrific rebounder. Excellent basketball IQ. Defends at a high level and is versatile. Finishes well around the basket. Good shot-blocker. Creates turnovers. Finishes well in transition. Plays with high level of energy. Leader. NBA-ready body.
Weaknesses: Must add a three-point shot. Terrible free-throw shooter. Tweener. Will he be able to create his own offense? Must improve speed. Has to add post game. Average athlete (34.5 vertical), despite some thunderous dunks.
Where He Would Help Spurs?
Branden Dawson seems like a typical “Spurs” draft pick. He has a good feel for the game and he knows his role. Dawson will add rebounding for the Spurs and versatility on defense.
NBA Comparison: Poor version of Draymond Green
Draymond Green and Branden Dawson are both versatile and have similar size. Of course Green is a borderline all-star, but Dawson has his similarities. They are also both terrific rebounders and have a high basketball IQ.
