Quick Season Review: Jordan Mickey had a huge season for the 22-11 LSU Tigers this season. Mickey, alongside Jarell Martin formed one of the best front courts in the nation. After a freshman season in which Mickey averaged 12.7 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 3.1 blocks, he stepped his production up a little. Mickey led the nation in blocks (3.6) and finished with 16 double-doubles. His best game of the season, was arguably against Mississippi State, when he finished with 25 points and 20 rebounds. A week later he finished with 24 points and 12 rebounds against Alabama. In the second round of the NCAA tourney, Mickey finished with 12 points, 14 rebounds, and 6 blocks in a one point loss to North Carolina State.
Strengths: Great shot blocker with length. Plays with energy. Excellent rebounder, despite lacking some height. Good athlete (37.5-inch vertical). Can finish with contact and make plays above the rim. Can pass for a big.
Weaknesses: Shooting range. Only made 1 three all season. Turnovers are a huge problem (3.3 to). Undersized for a power forward and too slow laterally for a small forward (tweener). Free-throw shooting. Must improve post game.
Why He Would Fit With the Spurs?
Jordan Mickey is being undervalued in the draft, mainly because of his size and lack of post moves. Tim Duncan, who is without question a top forward of all-time, can help with Mickey’s development on offense. At worst, Mickey is an energy guy off the bench that can rebound and block shots.
NBA Comparison: Larry Sanders
Similar body type to Larry Sanders and both are athletic. The difference Sanders is 6″11. Like Sanders, Mickey must improve inside offensively.
