RJ Hunter: 21-years old, Georgia State, Shooting Guard

Draft Express Measurements (Draft Combine): 6″6, 185-pounds, 6″10.5 wingspan

2014-15 Stats: 19.7 points, 4.7 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 1.0 blocks, 2.1 steals, 40% field goals, 88% free-throws, 31% threes, 37.0 minutes

Quick Season Review: Georgia State was one of the feel good stories in the 2014-15 collegiate basketball season, thanks to the coach’s son RJ Hunter. The 14th seeded Panthers upset the third seeded Baylor Bears in the second round of the NCAA tourney, after Hunter capped off a 10 point deficit with just under two minutes to play, with a three-pointer beyond 30-feet with 2 seconds to play. Hunter was the Panthers best player all season and times like this showed why he is a special player. Hunter finished the year with four 30 plus point games and a total of 16 games with at least 20 points. Hunter’s best scoring output came against Troy, when he scored 37 points.

Strengths: Great shooting range and terrific size for a two guard. His shooting percentages are as misleading as they come (did shoot 40% from three in 2013-14). Makes good passes and an improving ball handler. Solid rebounder with a good wingspan. Despite being an average defender, he is terrific at creating turnovers. Capable of blocking shots at next level, like Klay Thompson. High understanding of game.

Weaknesses: Can certainly work on efficiency (shot selection at times). Decent athlete (33.5-inch) that won’t blow by many players. Consistency on defensive end. Creating own shot against elite defenses (shown in tourney). Add weight to frame.

Where He Would Help Spurs?

RJ Hunter has the ability to become one of the best shooters at the next level. The Spurs have a few shooters (Danny Green & Marco Belinelli) that are free-agents, Hunter can certainly replace one. An NBA-ready prospect that will add scoring punch off the bench.

NBA Comparison: Kevin Martin

Kevin Martin has had quite an NBA career scoring wise, so it’s unlikely he will produce as much, but they are similar in many ways. Similar frame and shooting ability to Martin. Both have question marks with defense and frames.
