Norman Powell: 22-years old, UCLA, Shooting Guard
Draft Express Measurements (Draft Combine): 6″4, 215-pounds, 6″11 wingspan
2014-15 Stats: 16.4 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 0.4 blocks, 1.8 steals, 46% field goals, 75% free-throws, 32% threes, 34.6 minutes
Quick Season Review: Norman Powell improved in each of his four seasons at UCLA. In the first two seasons with the Bruins, Powell came off the bench and was a role player. In his final two years, Powell become one of the Bruins many scoring options and emerged into a key piece for them. Powell scored at least 11 points in 20 of the final 21 games for the Bruins. Powell scored at least 20 points, 14 different times this year. His best game was arguably against Washington, where he scored 28 points against Washington State. In the NCAA tournament, Powell averaged 16.7 points in three games.
Strengths: Rapidly improving as a scorer, mid-range is solid and is a streaky three-point shooter. Great athlete that can jump out the gym (40.5-inch vertical), had a bunch of highlight dunks at UCLA. Powell is a good defender with an NBA-ready body. Plays with a lot of energy and doesn’t make many mistakes defensively. Solid rebounder for a guard. Forces lots of steals due to incredible wingspan. One of the best wing attackers in the draft.
Weaknesses: There isn’t many red flags in Powell’s game, but one of his biggest is his handle and playmaking. Can improve NBA range. At 6″4 might be a tad undersized, can make up for it with wingspan and athleticism. Doesn’t have the potential of most prospects, as he might already have shown what he can do.
Where He Would Help Spurs?
Norman Powell is one of the most ready shooting guards, as he can score solidly and defend well. Powell will give the Spurs another athlete that can hit open shots and adds toughness. With Marco Belinelli, Cory Joseph, Manu Ginobili and Danny Green all being free-agents, the Spurs might need to fill a spot.
NBA Comparison: More athletic Arron Afflalo
Like Powell, Arron Afflalo went to UCLA. I can see Powell putting up numbers like 14 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 assists like Afflalo does at times. They are both good defenders and have the same frame.
