Leonard is still nursing a right eye infection that he suffered while on the European trip the Spurs made to play European teams, part of the NBA’s Global Games initiative.

There is some good news though. According to San Antonio Express-News writer Jeff McDonald, Kawhi Leonard did participate in practice for the second straight day.

Kawhi Leonard on the floor at end of practice, taking FTs with real, live teammates for 2nd straight day. Guess he’s not contagious anymore.

It would seem that the San Antonio Spurs are keeping out the 6-foot-7 forward just as a precaution. This is a very Spurs move as San Antonio is known for taking extra precautions with their players when it comes to injuries.

The San Antonio Spurs will miss Kawhi Leonard for the season opener though. Leonard is one of the games emerging stars at 23-years-old. The former San Diego State University star is also the team’s starting small forward.

The Spurs will seriously miss Leonard’s production against the Dallas Mavericks.

More from Air Alamo

Kawhi Leonard is coming off his best season in his young NBA career. The 6-foot-7 forward averaged 12.8 points and 6.2 rebounds in the 2013-2014 season on a solid 52% from the field and 38% from deep.

Leonard improved his play in the playoffs, averaging 14.3 points and 6.7 rebounds. Thanks to his outstanding performance in the NBA Finals, Kawhi Leonard was able to pick up the Finals MVP award, the second youngest to receive the award.

Also out for the Spurs are Tiago Splitter (right calf) and Patty Mills (shoulder).

What are thoughts about the injury? Should the San Antonio Spurs be playing Kawhi Leonard tonight since he is cleared to participate with teammates in practice? Let us know in the comments!
