At the end of this season rising star Kawhi Leonard can potentially become a free agent. Fresh off of a Finals MVP the question many have regarding Leonard, is how much is he worth? It’s tough to determine his worth as he wasn’t the same player in the regular season, this past postseason. In the regular season Leonard averaged 12.8 points and 6.2 rebounds. Leonard was also named to the All-NBA Defensive Second Team. In the playoffs Leonard bumped up his production, as he averaged 14.3 points and 6.7 rebounds. What stood out was his performance in the last three games of the NBA Finals, where he went toe-to-toe with LeBron James as he averaged 23.7 points and 9.3 rebounds.

If Leonard plays like he did in the playoffs, the sky is the limit. Defensively, Leonard is already an elite defender, as he possesses incredible length with good speed and a strong frame. The question marks in Leonard’s game come at the offensive end. Leonard can surely use improvement at creating his own shot and it starts with his handle. If Leonard improves his handle, he will be much more dangerous. Leonard can also improve on his playmaking. He rarely makes mistakes (1.2 turnovers), but that’s mostly because he makes the simple pass. A better handle and improved passing will make Leonard a true offensive threat.

Overall it is tough to place a value on Leonard as of right now, as he has not played the way he did in the Finals, in any regular season stretch of his career. A fair price for Leonard is about four years $44 million, because he is that good defensively and will likely improve at least a little offensively. If Leonard turns into a 17 or 18 point scorer you can expect the Spurs to pay him about $14-15 million a year. With Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili, and Tim Duncan aging it is important to sign Leonard long term.
