The San Antonio Spurs are looking to win back to back championships for the first time in franchise history. With Patty Mills out for a few months and Manu Ginobili bouncing back from a fibula injury, they can use some extra help. Ray Allen is currently a free agent and has made it clear that he wants to play next season. Allen is currently 39 years old, but is still a valuable asset as a shooter. In order for the Spurs to make a run at Allen, they will have to beat out other suitors like Cleveland, Chicago, and Washington.
There is no indication of what team will sign Allen, despite the NBA season beginning in less than a month. The 10 time all-star averaged 9.6 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2 assists last season. Allen, who is the all-time three point shooting leader, shot a respectable 38% from three. The most likely scenario is that Allen reunites with LeBron James in Cleveland, but if he doesn’t I can see him landing on the Spurs.
What will Allen bring to the Spurs?
Allen will add experience to a team full of it, as has won two NBA titles and has appeared in the playoffs 11 different seasons. Allen makes big shots as he showed in game six of the 2013 NBA Finals, when he hit the game tying three that will haunt Spurs fans for a long time. Allen has a high IQ as he rarely makes mistakes, like most Spurs players. He gives the Spurs another lethal three point threat to backup Danny Green and help while Mills is out. While it seems more likely that Allen will join James in Cleveland, there is still hope for the Spurs to land the player that robbed them of winning a title.
