Becky Hammon has a glorious opportunity in front of her with the San Antonio Spurs. What will be expected of her?
Keep up with Greg Popovich in the film room
As with every other major sport, the best teams and players become what they are by living in the film room. There they can dissect where they need to improve and where they can take advantage of their biggest strengths. Greg Popovich has been a master of this craft for years, using the film room to get his players ready for anything. Hammon already gained some experience with that while rehabbing a knee injury. Now that she is an assistant, studying film with Pop and the likes of Tim Duncan and others will become routine. There is no denying she is smart, but she’ll have to stay on top of things in order to keep her job. The San Antonio Spurs take pride in their hard work on and off the court.
Work out with Tony Parker and players
Several people have heard the rumors swirling that Becky Hammon has actually struck up an intimate relationship with All-Star Spurs point guard Tony Parker. That has led to speculation she got the job because of that connection. That is likely not true, but one thing is for sure. Hammon is going to be around Parker and the other players a lot, especially in the weight room where she’ll be expected to contribute to the activities both as a coach and a worker in her own right. Often it is during such sessions that connections between coach and player are made. So she must take them seriously.
Help craft game plans of NBA opponents
Popovich of course has final direction over game plans, but the future Hall of Fame coach is notorious for frequently asking opinions of his assistants. So Becky Hammon will have a key, if indirect say in how the San Antonio Spurs gear up for each opponent during the upcoming season. Working the white board is something every coach does, as she saw for so many years as a player.
Is Hammon ready? Only time will tell.
