Tim Duncan outdueled No. 1 overall pick Anthony Davis in the San Antonio Spurs’ 99-95 victory over the New Orleans Hornets.
Duncan and Davis traded baskets in the final minutes as Duncan and Boris Diaw coordinated two consecutive jaunts to the rim that resulted in five points. Davis later received an alley hoop, point guard Greivis Vasquez’ 13th assist of the night, to reclaim the lead for the Hornets with 1:34 to play.
Tony Parker, who finished with 23 points and six assists, knocked down an open 3-pointer with 49.6 seconds left, providing the Spurs with a two-point lead that they would not relinquish.
Kawhi Leonard scored 11 consecutive points in the third quarter that whittled down the Hornets’ lead, which was as high as 11 points in the first quarter. The lead changed 14 times, including 12 changes in the final frame alone.
