Update Oct. 1, 4:50 pm: The San Antonio Spurs have announced the addition of guard Sharron Collins to the training camp roster.

Collins appeared in 20 games with the Charlotte Bobcats in 2010-11, averaging 0.9 points in 3.3 minutes per game. Collins, standing 5-foot-11, played four seasons with the University of Kansas. He averaged 9.3 points and 3.1 assists in the 2007-08 season as Kansas won the National Championship that year. The Spurs’ roster now stands at 20.

Oct. 1, 1:02 pm: Coming off his first NBA championship, Eddy Curry (yes, the immortal Eddy Curry who NBA analysts ranked as the worst player in the league, a drop of seven spots from last year) will apparently partake in Spurs training camp. His addition means 19 Spurs will be vying for roster spots.

Of course, the majority of the roster — with the possible exception of one spot — is essentially unavailable to middling talents like Derrick Brown, Josh Powell, Tyler Wilkerson and Wesley Witherspoon. This reality decreases the likelihood of the Spurs to unearth the next Gary Neal.

According to Jeff McDonald and Mike Monroe of the San Antonio Express-News, Curry has worked out at the University of Miami during the offseason and looks much slimmer this season. Curry claims he dropped 15 pounds over the offseason which would bring his weight to approximately 280 pounds.

Curry appeared in 14 games with the Miami Heat last season, averaging 2.1 points, 0.9 rebounds and 46.2% shooting. He totaled a 3.6 PER which is significantly below-average. (In a limited sample size, of course.) The previous season, a seven-game stint with the New York Knicks, Curry posted a negative PER. I’m not sure if that is equivalent to the production of a high school athlete but it’s probably close. For reference, Curry hasn’t produced an average (or higher) PER since the 2007-08 season, where he averaged 13.2 points and 4.7 rebounds.
