Kings’ DeMarcus Cousins suspended 2 games without pay for confronting Spurs announcer Sean Elliot in a hostile manner after game Friday.

Rather than doling out a fine, the league felt it was necessary to suspend the mercurial center without pay. Cousins, averaging 17.3 points and 9.8 rebounds this season, will miss tonight’s game against the Los Angeles Lakers and the Portland Trail Blazers game on Tuesday.

Two days removed from the San Antonio Spurs’ 97-86 victory over the Sacramento Kings at Sleep Train Arena, you are probably well aware about the brewing back-and-forth between Spurs color commentator Sean Elliott and third-year center DeMarcus Cousins.

To summarize: Elliott took offense to Cousins’ trash talking in the fourth quarter of a four-point game. His trash talk, directed to Elliott’s former teammate and 13-time All-Star Tim Duncan, elicited an on-air response in which he openly criticized his lack of humility.

Cousins then responded, telling the Sacramento Bee, that he felt Elliott’s comments were “immature.”

And that, seemingly, was all she wrote.

Only that wasn’t the case. The NBA is reportedly reviewing the incident between Cousins and Elliott after the mercurial center confronted Elliott following the game. Per Mike Monroe of the San Antonio Express-News:

Apparently informed postgame of Elliott’s remarks, Cousins appeared on the court in his uniform and confronted Elliott after he and broadcaster Bill Land completed their postgame show.

“I was wondering why Cousins was out there in his uniform waiting for them to finish his postgame show,” said Bill Schoening, who does the play-by-play call on radio broadcasts of Spurs games. “Then I saw them in an animated conversation out on the court.

“I observed Sean walk away from Cousins and Cousins continue to talk to Sean as he left the scene, but I couldn’t hear what was being said.”

An NBA spokesperson said the league is aware of, and reviewing, the incident.

There has been no word on whether the league is likely to dole out a consequence for Cousins’ actions.
