The Orlando Magic hired Thunder executive Rob Hennigan for their vacant general manager position according to Ken Berger of CBSSports.com.

Hennigan quickly developed trust in the Thunder organization, moving up the ladder in two years. Hennigan was an indirect result of the San Antonio Spurs’ excellent front office model.

Magic chief executive Alex Martins announced the decision today.

“It is with great enthusiasm and optimism that we announce Rob Hennigan as our new General Manager,” said Martins. “Rob is an astute strategist and evaluator of talent who comes to the Magic family from two championship-level organizations. We feel he is an outstanding fit and the right choice to lead our Basketball Operations team in achieving our championship goals.”

Berger astutely noted that Orlando was looking for an executive with championships on his resume. Neither Henningan or former Hornets general manager Jeff Bower fit the bill. Only Spurs’ assistant general manager Dennis Lindsey filled the requirement. Apparently, the Magic back tracked and decided to bring in a promising young executive instead. Hennigan is now the leagues youngest general manager at 30-years-old.

Prior to his assistant GM position in Oklahoma City, Hennigan worked for the Spurs as an intern in 2004-05 before he was promoted to director of basketball operations in 2007.

Oklahoma City assistant general manager Rob Hennigan seems to be the favorite for the vacant Orlando Magic general manager position according to Yahoo! Sports.

Orlando has limited the field to three guys. The aforementioned Hennigan, Spurs’ assistant general manager Dennis Lindsey and former Hornets general manager Jeff Bower. Orlando wants to fill their vacancy within about 10 days prior to the 2012 NBA Draft, scheduled for June 28th.

Yahoo! Sports explains Hennigan’s credentials.

“Hennigan has followed a similar path as his boss, Thunder GM Sam Presti: an Emerson College alum who was hired as an intern in San Antonio and rose through the ranks. Hennigan is finishing his fourth year in Oklahoma City, where he was promoted from director of college/international player personnel to assistant GM/player personnel two years ago.”
