Update Oct. 6, 9:25 am: X-rays reveal that Marcus Denmon has broken his fifth metatarsal in his right foot according to LeJournal.com. He will be sidelined for six weeks though no surgery will be needed.

Oct. 6, 8:51 am: Marcus Denmon is still far from developing into a NBA caliber player. A successful stint with Élan Chalon may be a strong enough case to warrant an eventual NBA roster spot.

From the onset, Denmon was already developing into a leader for Chalon. He led the team in scoring with 16.7 points prior to their first regular season game against Tony Parker’s ASVEL squad.

After scoring nine points in 22 minutes against ASVEL, Denmon left the game with a foot injury in the third quarter (via BasketNews.net). The severity of the injury is not known but it doesn’t appear to be minor as Chalon head coach Gregor Beugnot is not too optimistic.

“It is on the side of the foot on a metatarsal. I hope he has not broken his foot. He may have moved a metatarsal, or there is something. I hope there will be examinations fast.”

Should Beugnot’s fears be actualised, Denmon’s first season overseas would be severely compromised. Instead of enhancing his game and learning to play both guard positions well, he would spend his time rehabbing his injury on the sidelines.

This is not a good thing for the 6-foot-3 guard who is trying to solidify his standing as a basketball player.

Marcus Denmon was the prototypical 2-guard for Missouri despite his point guard height. He was barely asked to distribute, averaging 1.7 assists per game in his collegiate career.

Instead, he was utilized as the primary weapon offensively and, from an efficiency standpoint, his usage rate was warranted.

Denmon will invariably need to learn how to fulfill the point guard role to succeed at the professional level. If he can distill his scoring ability and exhibit an ability to run an offense perhaps his transition to the NBA won’t be as severe.

In an interview with Lucas Pastore of Spurs Brasil, Denmon said the Spurs will maintain contact with his new club Elan Chalon and developing at point guard is an imperative step in his development.

“Yes, my entire time here the Spurs will maintain contact,” Denmon said. “Continue to develop all around is important but, mainly, running a team and being efficient at the 1 position.”

The next step will be to carve up French defenses with Chalon, an easier proposition than the NBA but not an easy task nonetheless.

Denmon is confident that his game, which resembles Eddie House given his reliance on the 3-pointer with a touch of quickness, will translate to the international level.

“Yes I do, I work really hard, and hopefully I am fortunate enough to stay healthy and play well,” Denmon said.
