Anderson was waived in the offseason following uninspiring averages of 3.7 points, 1.3 rebounds, 0.8 assists and 38 percent shooting in two seasons.

Anderson was picked up from the scrap heap by the Atlanta Hawks. After failing to impress the Hawks brass, the Oklahoma State product was waived on Oct. 27, just days prior to the regular season opener.

If Anderson is indeed added to the roster, he will inherit a spot that is currently uninhabited by his main competition. Forwards Kawhi Leonard (quadriceps tendinitis) and Stephen Jackson (fractured finger) are both sidelined with injuries.

The Atlanta Hawks have waived forward James Anderson today. Accounting for the release of forward Damion James, Atlanta has cut their roster to 14 players in preparation for the regular season.

Anderson, selected in the first round of the 2011 draft by the San Antonio Spurs, averaged two points while shooting 23.8 percent from the field in six preseason games.

The 23-year-old Anderson drew his only start of the preseason against San Antonio, in which he earned 17 minutes. He scored five points in addition to tallying three personal fouls.

The former Oklahoma State standout drew praise for his shooting but his touch has yet to materialize on an NBA team. In the preseason, he missed nine of 11 3-point attempts. This was a recurring theme with the Spurs, too; Anderson made a measly 32.5 percent of his attempts from behind the arc.

As such, the Spurs declined his third-year team option even though it represented a small fiscal amount ($1.6 million). The resurgence of Danny Green and Kawhi Leonard and the addition of Stephen Jackson made him expendable.

With less than a week until the regular season, Anderson will have to wait for another opportunity — if there is still one available.
