According to Art Garcia of Fox Sports Southwest, the Dallas Mavericks have claimed Eddy Curry off waivers.

Curry was released, along with forward Derrick Brown, from the San Antonio Spurs training camp roster Tuesday. He appeared in five exhibition games, averaging 8.4 points and 3.6 rebounds. Offensively, Curry is still a potent threat, having made 68 percent of his attempts in the preseason.

Defensively, the 29-year-old center, whose appeared in 24 games since the 2007-08 season, is a liability — especially in the pick-and-roll, where his limited mobility is highlighted.

The Mavericks have a frontcourt void that Curry could potentially fill in the interim. Dirk Nowitzki will miss approximately six weeks after undergoing arthroscopic surgery. Chris Kaman has been hampered in training camp with injuries to his back and Achilles.

So, theoretically, Curry could earn playing time with the Mavericks this season. He isn’t a game-changer on either side of the floor but for a team struggling with injuries to their frontcourt, he makes a solid addition.

Just don’t expect Curry to make a dramatic, title-influencing impact this season (or ever).

The San Antonio Spurs have waived forward Derrick Brown and center Eddy Curry today, bringing the roster down to 16. At least one more cut will need to be made prior to Oct. 29.

Prior to the Spurs’ fifth exhibition game in Miami, Spurs coach Gregg Popovich hinted that the final roster spot, if the team elected to use it all, would be between Brown and Curry.

In typical Spurs fashion, they signed while we zagged. Forwards Josh Powell and Wesley Witherspoon, who seemed like inevitable cuts, are still possibilities to fill the bench.

Through five preseason games, Brown averaged 6.6 points while shooting 65.2 percent. Curry, whose size and offensive ability made him an intriguing fit, averaged 8.4 points and 3.6 rebounds in 15.4 minutes per game. Curry appeared in five exhibitions, earning a start against Atlanta, in which he scored 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Starting alongside Curry against Atlanta, Brown finished in double-figures with 10 points.

While both Brown and Curry will need to find work elsewhere, the two have likely earned the Popovich stamp of approval.
