Spurs are 13-9, Road Win!

AUTHOR: | IN: Game Recaps, Spurs | COMMENTS: 1 Comment

So we learned that Gary Neal has marbles and Danny Green is a hustler. I’ll leave the interpretation of that up to you, dear reader. Whether or not that Dallas game (the almost Comeback) means anything to the season narrative remains to be seen. For you post-1999-ers I will offer up the comeback against the Rockets in which that flawed but resilient Spurs team battled back (and won) against a team that seemed to be our betters. It seemed just as improbable. Mario Elie had to instill toughness in us then. This year? Well we didn’t need toughness so [...]

Richard Jefferson and Disappointment

AUTHOR: | IN: Spurs | COMMENTS: 2 Comments

Apparently there is no good reason to let him go. It will cost a ton, there is no one to adequately replace him, and he will be relatively useful. The only reason to let him go is that he annoys the entire city of San Antonio. Like most people, I don’t really care about the ins and outs of the cap. They can do what they like. I get that there isn’t much room to maneuver. I get that Peter Holt is not Mark Cuban. I get that San Antonio is not New York. I know that we need to [...]

Season Preview

AUTHOR: | IN: Spurs | COMMENTS: 1 Comment

Where do we place our expectations as fans? For the last decade we’ve thought of the Spurs as perennial title challengers and top five finishers. It was reasonable to be let down if we lost to a non-Laker team and even then, we had reason to believe we could beat some of those squads. The Spurs fortune and canny has been written about and hashed to death over this decade. The one year we didn’t challenge for at least a division championship David Robinson sat for all but 17 games. We only had to deal with that blip of a [...]

TJ Ford to Sign With Spurs

AUTHOR: | IN: League, Spurs | COMMENTS: 1 Comment

The rumor was floating around twitter tonight that TJ Ford, former Longhorn, Buck, Raptor and Pacer was going to sign here for the veteran’s minimum. Seems like it is fairly certain, no? Yep. I like the move. Back up point guard has been a problem for a while. George Hill, was kinda shoe-horned into the position and felt much more comfortable at the off-guard spot. Not only does TJ play the position, he plays it with a similar style. He doesn’t have the same quickness he did when he was a rookie but he isn’t slow either. I’ve always thought [...]

Renegade Ball

AUTHOR: | IN: Spurs | COMMENTS: None Yet

A speculative tweet by Ethan Sherwood Strauss had me thinking of a plausible alternative basketball league to rival the NBA during the lockout. With no obvious overseas option for most players and the owners’ siege laid the players have little leverage. The idea of a renegade league has been bandied about but with nothing of real substance offered. Let’s take a crack at it, shall we? First, let’s take stock of the situation. For all the brand recognition of the NBA’s teams league’s modern success has been built on the individual player personalities. It almost goes without saying that our Renegade [...]

Stern Not Doing His Job?

AUTHOR: | IN: Spurs | COMMENTS: None Yet

No doubt by now you have heard that NBA Commissioner David Stern has cancelled the first to weeks of the regular season. This comes on the heels of some twelve hours of meeeting on Sunday and Monday. Union rep Derek Fisher and Stern both say the parties are no nearer a compromise. For an excellent takedown on of David Stern, read this epic post by the inestimable Tom Ziller.

Allow Me To Reintroduce Myself

AUTHOR: | IN: Spurs | COMMENTS: 3 Comments

This is Air Alamo. We cover the Spurs. That is if the NBA gives us something to cover soon. No doubt you have heard that Derek Fisher, and NBA Players Association head Billy Hunter are to meet in a last-minute, heretofore unplanned meeting tonight (Sunday) in New York City. Simply put, this fight is about money and greed. In the rarified air of talent and money that both parties possess in their respective situations, this is about much more. It seems ridiculous, no doubt, to we fans who shell out big bucks to these owners to see these players. [...]

FIBA: NBA Stars Can Play Overseas

AUTHOR: | IN: Spurs | COMMENTS: None Yet

Basketball’s governing body said Friday it will clear NBA players under contract to play in its leagues during the lockout, as long as they return once the lockout is over. In a ruling that paves the way for players to earn a paycheck on the court, FIBA agreed with NBA and players’ association officials that players are free to sign anywhere, but do so at their own risk of injury. “As the world governing body for basketball, we strongly hope that the labor dispute will be resolved as soon as possible, and that the NBA season is able to begin [...]
