Fresh off his hometown parade with the Naismith Trophy, San Antonio Spurs shooting guard Danny Green took to Twitter to announce he will be switching to jersey number 14 for the new season.
“And for those asking about the number change…yes it is really happening #14″
Danny Green wore the number 14 while in college at North Carolina and during his rookie season with the Cleveland Cavaliers. After signing with the San Antonio Spurs during the 2011 off-season, Green took up the jersey number 4 due to the fact Gary Neal occupied the number 14 through the 2013 season.
Those wondering why Danny Green didn’t wear number 14 this past season need to understand NBA rules require players to apply for a number change at least a year in advance. Only when players are traded, (think Allen Iverson wearing then number 1 with Detroit), is this rule not applicable.
Danny Green is coming off a solid season where he established himself as a role player capable of more on some nights. Green not only scored a career high of 33 points against the Phoenix Suns in April but he was a difference-maker in Game 3 of the NBA Finals due to his 7-of-8 shooting and disruptive defense off the dribble.
Danny Green has joined Michael Jordan and James Worthy as former North Carolina Tar Heels to win both NCAA and NBA Championships.
