There is no question the primary focus of the San Antonio Spurs is retaining Boris Diaw and Patty Mills. What are some updates?
Blazers seeking to unite Diaw with Lamarcus Aldridge
Winning an NBA championship and being a big reason why is something that always gets the attention of other teams in free agency. Everybody knows the San Antonio Spurs didn’t really take control of the Finals against Miami until Boris Diaw entered the starting lineup. It was clear his size, athleticism and passing ability was something the Heat couldn’t handle and something the Spurs need to win. To that end it seems other Western Conference teams are hoping to pry them apart. One example are the Portland Trailblazers. The team is in need of a stretch four type like Diaw to help All-Star Lamarcus Aldridge on the floor. Not only can they offer more money, but the fact they’re a contender might be enough to coerce Diaw away from the champs.
Knicks want Mills for his ability to thrive under big NBA lights
Patty Mills also showed his mettle under pressure in the Finals, particularly in the last two games when he posted double digit points off the bench. This knack for big game play is something the New York Knicks seem to have watched very carefully. They are in need of players who can handle the bright lights and high pressure atmosphere of Madison Square Garden. With Carmelo Anthony likely on his way out the retooling of the roster has begun. Adding a veteran point guard with championship pedigree like Mills wouldn’t be a bad place to start. He would also come slightly cheaper since he wasn’t a starter last season.
The fact is the San Antonio Spurs have to weather this NBA free agency storm. While winning is a big negotiating tactic for them, Boris Diaw and Patty Mills were always going to at least see what offers came their way. It’s just a matter of sweating it out now.
