All-time, All-Spurs Team: Shooting Guards

AUTHOR: bdiddy | IN: Spurs | COMMENTS: 3 Comments |

I think we all have a pretty good idea who is going to come out on top in this poll, and that’s all well and good because the Man deserves that level of recognition.  However, I would like you all to look deep within your Silver-n-Black hearts to help us fill out the Second and Third teams.

Poll on the other side
Ground Rules:
1. You may vote for more than one player at a time
2. You may vote more than once
3. Poll will be active until August 15th
4. Treat your feet well
5. Be kind to cows

Hmmm..lots of people voting George Gervin as an “other” Shooting Guard. Which brings up a good point I should have mentioned in the opening statement.

When researching this poll, I found that some players were listed as guards and others listed as guard-fowards. When there was no doubt that the player was primarily a “2,” I quickly put him on this list. However, I did exercise a bit of discretion in regards to the guard-forwards to make sure that both the SG and SF polls provided as many opportunities as possible for player representation.

Bdiddy, you predicted who would come out on top this week, but did you expect Manu would get nearly half the vote total? Also, a byproduct of this exercise is a reminder that the second highest pct. is going to a former player who has done some dispicable, disgusting and destructive things to people during his life away from baksetball. Alvin Robertson’s NBA career is arguably a notch or two below Hall of Fame consideration. Any discussion of the league’s best defensive guards in history includes him. His statistics and achievements as a Spur are enough to have his name & number raised to the rafters at AT&T Center but his criminal behavior (which has continued up to the present), convictions, prison time has eliminated that honor happening for him.

I didn’t expect such a landslide in favor of Manu. Alvin Robertson got some of the “other” votes in the point guard poll, so it isn’t quite as bad as it looks.

As for his behavior, it is just another reminder that sports figures are people that are ultimately fallible.
